School all year long?

$
0
0

We were having a discussion during dinner this evening; my oldest son was telling us that he had to debate the topic of whether this country should adopt the idea of school all year long. I jokingly said that I was all for it.

Honestly, though, I'd be hard pressed to agree to such a thing, at least not that easily. I understand the reasoning for it, but I think that there are other ways of achieving the same result (better grades, not graduating kids that can't read, etc).

Thoughts?

As an aside, I wasn't entirely certain where to put this; I think it's a safe enough thing that it shouldn't lead to BeeKeepers. Hopefully, I made the right choice.

Here it is, done for ReaperCon!

I'm calling it "A Mother's Wrath"

"Sir Aberforth the Argumentive thought this would be easy. He had heard of the terrible dragon that lived in the jungle near the natives' village, and he felt he could rid them of the threat.

Imagine his laughter when he found but a baby dragon, and cornered the thing, aiming to slay it. He'll drag its corpse back to the village and show the silly natives, who obviously had never seen a adult dragon, the silliness of their fear.

As he lined up for the final blow, he caught movement out of the corner of his eye as a patch of seeming jungle suddenly rose..."

77177: Rusty Wyrmgear

"It seemed like such a good deal. Braythick Bearhammer the dwarf mapmaker/treasure salvager had been poking around some gnome's antique dealings stall and seen it standing there, looming in the back of the tent. It was massive, a masterwork of engineering, gone to rust and ruin. Still, it could potentially be useful to the dwarf. It did after all have a blade upon its tail, and long legs. It could carry his tools! Yes, it had been a brilliant plan. Something to carry his tools, and any 'rescued' loot he found in abandoned ruins. Something to defend him from the wilderness [and natives of said ruins that might disagree with his right of salvage].

And it had been a steal. The gnome had been desperate to get rid of the thing. It seemed too good to be true! Something like this could save him the cost of hiring lackeys to carry his stuff, of hiring thugs to protect him. It wouldn't need to eat, or sleep, it could guard him while he slept. Definitely too good to be true.

And it was.

Because apparently it had a few screws loose. Literally and figuratively. It had the attention span of a jackdaw. Braythick did not want the confounded thing to get distracted by a butterfly while he was trying to fight off a mountain lion or troll. And yet, as he unslung his hammer to remind the local natives of his right to found loot, the darn thing would turn around and trot off without a care in the world, leaving Braythick to run in an undignified manner after yelling at it.

And most likely, the gnome that sold it was laughing as he counted his coins, grateful to be rid of the troublesome, ancient war machine"

is distilled water important

$

simple question. the reason i ask is on some paints from reaper and vallejo I get sort of a grainy texture. my googling the problem lead to some people suggesting distilled water. It isn't the paint because i have multiple bottles of a few and while they blend well etc, i dislike the finish. i dont have issues with using GW and P3 paints of this nature.

so, is distilled water mandatory?

Lem and his friend were just having a jam session at the local bar when an oversized cranky, horns on too tight, minotaur takes exception to the music...

We now join in as the Demon Lord asks , not so nicely, the gnome to stop torturing that poor cat while lem looks on in amusment.

I figure it would be fun if we (Reaper Forumnites) All get on the same server and/or make a list of what servers we are on. Not that we necessarily have to play the game together but I think it would be nice to be able to ask for help and actually get it. Anyone who has ever played an MMO will understand that struggle.

Experimentation in Primer with Bones (Pic heavy)

$

Even though Bones does not require primer, a lot of us still base coat it for paint adhesion.  We've noticed that some paints are more likely to come off easily than others.  I'm going to start playing around with several common and hobbyist spray primers and report the results.  Baphomet did some preliminary experimentation here:  http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/48669-bones-the-first-coat-is-the-difference/?p=1047003

First up will be Armory Grey Primer and Armory Clear matte sealer.

So far, the Armory Grey is amazing.  It dries fast and seems to adhere really well.  I think I like it over gray gesso and any of the normal acrylic model paints i've used.  No tackiness, even after 24 hours of sitting.  For this experiment I'm using Narthax.

DSM "The Lovers" for MFCA

So it appears I will be able to go to MFCA this year.  I will need to move fast to finish a major project for this show.  I have a little over a month.  I'll bring some of my recent pieces but I want to finish something to a really high standard but I only have time for a small project.  I don't do military or historical pieces so I will be entering the Fantasy category.

30.jpg

Based on this art work by Stephanie Law Dark Sword produced this:

7617_f1_p.jpg

I'm going to paint it more or less in this scheme with a few modifications to increase the drama of the piece.  I'm going to build a quite elaborate base to replicate the feel of the painting somewhat.  It ought to be an adventure.

Anyone know a good source for Turtle doves?  unfortunately, infamy will not deliver pigeons until after the show so those won't work.

Random Convention questions

I would have posted these in a different thread, but it's a fairly eclectic sampling of stuff; I wasn't entirely certain where they'd fit....

Anyhow, here goes:

1) Some of the game time slots seem to cross over dinner. Do these games 'pause' for dinner, or if you're in the game, you're skipping dinner?

2) What are 'TBD' slots for? Are these last minute classes/games/something else? When will they be determined?

3) I have some metal I'd like to bring for melt; it's not mentioned in the melt thread one way or another. Will that thread be reopened soon?

I'm sorry if I missed this info somewhere.

Since so many of the cool kids are doing it, I decided to have a go as well. I am hoping this will help keep me motivated for the con this year. I want to enter all four categories this year, but we will see how it goes.

The first will be either an Open or Diorama category entry, depending on how productive I am. In keeping with the sci-fi theme this year, I decided to take one of the Dark Sword Miniatures' pieces and give it a sci-fi spin. Meet the Jedi panda! This is Olivia, the Red Panda from DSM. I obviously have converted her polearm to the dual bladed lightsaber. In addition to that, I gave her a hood and also removed the left hand and gave her a skeletal (read: robotic) hand as well. Many thanks to Master Talespinner for his help during the initial part of this WIP! Here she is after a zenithal primer (and then going back and fixing the mold lines I missed...) Pardon the rough primering in spots; as I was correcting the sculpting/mold lines, I rubbed off some primer and quickly went in and reprimered spots.

2015 Summer Exchange - Official Thread

$
0
0
With the Spring Exchange winding down, its time to start thinking about the next exchange.  As before, there will be about two months of painting time.  Signups will run from May 1st to May 10th, with assignments going around the 15th.  Miniatures should be mailed by July 15th.
I'm posting from ReaperCon, so I wont be around the next few days to answer questions, but I'll answer when I get back.

If you've never done an exchange before, how it works is like this: Everyone who is interested PMs me with the questionnaire below filled out. I then match you with a person whom you will paint a mini for, and a second person whom you will receive a painted mini from (sometimes it's the same person). You have until the deadline to send your mini out (please try really hard to do this, though we understand if sometime life gets in the way). That's pretty much it, feel free to PM me with questions.

How does it work?  (tl;dr version)
  • Fill out the questionnaire below and send it to me via PM.
  • Paint your partner a mini and mail it to them by July 15th.
  • This thread is for official business only. Use the chatter thread for random conversations.
Full Rules
  • Reaper minis are the focus. If you want to paint more than one miniature, you may do so. If you wish to include other gifts for your recipient, you may do so, but please keep them small. There is no hard and fast rule, but keeping the value less than the price of a single miniature is a good rule of thumb. The focus of the exchange should be a Reaper product.
  • Fill out the questionnaire below and send it to me via PM. Please fill out the current version of the questionnaire, as some of the questions have changed. I am going to be a little stricter than normal about filling in all the questions and may send it back for clarification if you don't.
  • Please don't contact your partner unless they have listed themselves as okay with contact. I've included it on the questionnaire, so you'll know who wants to keep it secret and who doesn't.
  • If you want to keep your participation a secret, make sure that you don't post in here or the chatter thread.
  • Try really hard to get your miniature out by the deadline. Let an organizer know if you are going to be late.
  • This thread is for official business/discussion only. That includes stuff like questions for me, or updates about sending and receiving packages, but discussions about what you're painting or how awesome the mini you received was should go in the chatter thread.
  • If you are mailing internationally and plan to send more than just miniatures/paint, you must contact your recipient to get any "bonus items" approved. We don't want any trouble with customs.
  • The organizers (fanguad, ub3r_n3rd) can help facilitate any anonymous conversations you want to have with your partner.
  • Have fun!
Deadline
The deadline to mail out miniatures for this exchange will be two months from when assignments are sent out, on July 15th.

Assignments Deadline
The organizers will send the assignments out in about two weeks (May 15th).  Please let me know if you're interested by the 10th.  I can't make any guarantees if you're late, but I will try to make arrangements.

Exchange Assistant
ub3r_n3rd will be helping me run this exchange.  He will coordinate and communicate with approximately half the participants.  You can contact either of us if you have any questions or issues.

77381: Dragons Don't Share 2014

Hi all,

I finished up my Dragons Don't Share diorama that I've been working on for about three weeks.  It's on display at a local game shop, so apologies for the pictures not being super high quality.

You can see the in-progress pics over at my WIP thread at: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/60821-77381-dragons-dont-share-2014-wip-blackgray-and-red-dragon/

The heroes' color choices were done to match the five factions playing a role in the current D&D public play storylines.

Here is a paintjob I did for my girlfriend. This is her gunslinger gypsy, she is also blind (hence the no pupils). She was described to me as 'no fashion sense', unfortunately I could not make it really horrible, so I opted for 'gypsy colorful' instead.

The gun is a 'mod', cut off the hand (and staff) and replaced it with another hand with a gun! This miniature originally came with Kaladrax I believe.

D&D After Hours - ReaperCon 2015

$

Talking with a few of the fine forum folks whom I consider to be awesome friends and asked the question whether D&D games were going on "after Con" hours in the evenings and where they were meeting up in previous years.

Found out that some people like to hang out in the lobby or outside the convention doors and in hotel rooms to play.

So, this thread is gauge interest in some 'after hours' D&D 5E games with friends/forum members. This is outside of the Con and not Reaper's game in any way, shape, or form. Just friends playing.

I've got the books for 5E (PHB, DMG, and MM) which I'll bring along with me (and some minis hah!). I'd like to gauge interest in seeing how many would want to play and/or DM with me. I don't mind DM'ing a game or two, but I'd also like to play so if there are others that are interested:

Please post whether you'd like to play only or DM as well. I'm thinking one-shot adventures with your pre-made characters and I'll have some pre-generated ones in case you forgot yours or something along those lines.

As far as #'s of people. I'm personally comfortable DM'ing for up to 6 people in a group, any more than that and it bogs down no matter the system IMO.

Anyhow, lets do this and get plans together with characters ready to go beforehand.

ETA - The D&D 5E basic rules are available on the WOTC site for FREE, this has the "basic 4" classes and quick rules.

5E is pretty neat because there are less mechanics to work with such as conditions are always about "advantage/disadvantage" so:

disadvantage = 2 x d20's and you take the lowest roll

advantage = 2x d20's and you take the highest roll

Fishnjeeps Dragons Don't Share Epic Diorama...

$

Okay so Epic may not be appropriate, but I'll let you judge that for yourself. I got my hands on a Dragons Don't Share 2 at Adepticon (thank you reaper Bryan and Reaper Ed!) and I decided to begin a fairly substantial diorama with it. I'm still working on an appropriate name for the piece. I'll have a narrative story to go with it, but the Idea is still changing slightly as I build this. I hope to have this ready for ReaperCon 2016. So to start, This is how one carries a DDS2 home on a motorcycle...

0321151834_zpstpflfjzc.jpg

And no he will not share with you...

0321151949_zpsmpmls6k1.jpg

On to the actual Diorama! The ideas started when we purchased a Lack end table from Ikea for about $3 from their as is section. We needed the legs but not the top. So I decided that the top would make a great diorama base and it is 22" which is 2" smaller than the size limit for most painting competitions near me (and reapercon).

The idea is that an army of Dwarves are attempting to take down a dragon that has been harassing their kingdom. They find the dragon in some ruins near the creek and ambush him.

So with this in mind, I started to lay out how I wanted things to be situated. This was a rough test to see how the DDS2 scaled to the table top.

0322150957_zpsu1olvjfw.jpg

I think it worked well. So then it was on to Reaper's website to see about finding the right dwarves for this. I knew I wanted 2 team of Dwarves with chains trying to subdue the dragon. The dragons pose even looks like he is in mid attack so this works well enough. I ordered 6 14596: Kragmarr Guard to act as the chain crews. It will be a fairly straightforward swap from their spears to holding a chin (I hope). I plan to use the dwarf that came with the DDS2 set but not any of the other adventurers. Also shown is 14607 Kragmarr Ram Rider  though I'm not sure if he will stay, 14379 Shield Maiden, and 02376 Brag Ironballs. I still need to order some crossbow wielding dwarves and some rank and file dwarves to add to the scene. Plus some dead adventurers and skellys to add to the scenery. right now I have 10 Dwarves in the scene with plans to add at least another 15-20. I'll also be raising the scene on cork so that the building  terrain is at slightly different levels and I can add a creek. This is where I am at so far, I have to wait until payday to order more dwarves. I'll leave a nice list of all of the Miniatures I'm using as i go to make it easier.

This is an over view of where the Diorama sits now with more dwarves....
