Regarding Bones, Basing and Monster Sizes

$

So I've been wondering, given that many Bones minis are rather on the generous side size-wise, how are people reconciling that with games that have specific rules around monster size?  These rules often also dictate what bases are appropriate for a miniature.

I'm thinking in particular of minis like the gnolls and bugbears that KS supporters have so many of now.  As I understand it, in most D&D rulesets, bugbears are medium monsters, which means they should be based as such.. but their legs are HUGE and set very far apart!  So what are you folks doing?  Just basing them as though they were larger, or cramming them on smaller bases somehow?

I don't often document my works-in-progress, but I've done so before and I'll do so again.

This thread will let me keep my WIPs in one place.

[EDIT 4/07/15: I didn't know that "never-ending" WIP threads weren't allowed.  Sorry, moderators!  I'll resolve to end this one before it gets too big.  Maybe a WIP of just one new figure will be enough.  I'll start a new thread as needed.]

Here are links to my previous WIP threads:

03419 Vaeloth, hellborn paladin (December 2011)

This is less of a WIP and more of a plea for help.  I am having trouble getting the gold NMM to look right on this.  The figure is Spyglass/Eolith 54 mm Anastasia, and I am trying for more than a high end tabletop for her.

Suggestions on how I should paint her dagger would be great too.  I am fairly happy with her dress so far, and I have not started highlighting the black.  Thank you all in advance!

I notice the remainder of the bones 2 minis have moved from the previews to store, but do not currently have prices and will not show up in the cart.

Are they likely to be purchasable via the online store this weekend? Because I am going to order a sophie and mouselings and was hoping to grab some of the bones while I was at it.

I was wondering if my fellow forumnites could help me out. I wanted to get a feel for the Pro's/Cons' of different systems. What you like about it, how well it works with new players, do they accommodate for both Fantasy & Sci-fi, etc?

Example:

System: D&D 5e

Pros: I like bacon

Cons: It doesn't have enough Bacon.

More details: typing is fun.

This cool dragon person was painted up to be our 5th Edition Vengeance Paladin, follower of the Storm Lord.  The brown spots on her scales and skin are part of her back story, where her lineage is questionable and her mother was executed for infidelity.  The character is not on good terms with her family....

What to do for my April resolutionary challenge? I haven't actually decided yet! Apart from painting a bunch of minis that is.
At any rate, as per the resolutionary painting challenge guidelines, I will post them here, and link in my post in the challenge thread.

Drake the Dragon Wargame: Yeev of The Builders faction.

Not much to say about it really. The Yeev is a type of Dragonkin, a smaller breed of dragons that are servants to the true dragons that rule the Drake world of Dara.

Drake was a kickstarter that delivered one wave of nice minis (with many teething problems, but nice anyhow), then did another kickstarter and disappeared with all the money, ponzi-style. I do not expect to hear any more from them. Too bad, the concept was really good and with some work could have been a viable game.

I had this guy half-finished on my shelf for a long time now. I finally finished him up.

I tried to inject some serious red in the deep crevices to not just make it brown, and I think I succeeded. :)

1/3 of the way there - KSII Bones Core Set Humanoids

Yes, that's right - I finished off number 53 of the Core Set a few days ago. Unfortunately, I don't have a camera atm, so I only have pictures of some of them, but here's what I do have... All of these were just painted to tabletop standards, but they do look damn good while we're playing.

First off, a priest/paladin of one of my campaign gods, the Phoenix, whose colors are gold and red. His name is technically Cieoblathe, but I've used him as a standin for lots of stuff.

DSC02770.JPG DSC02769.JPG

A cleric of my campaign goddess, the Kirin, whose colors are silver and blue. She's mostly just a standin, too. This was my first attempt at sheer fabric (on the leg) - I like how it and the hair came out, and have since touched up the staff.

DSC02779.JPG DSC02780.JPG

A paladin of the Kirin. I just love painting the Bones Dwarves - I think they held up the best of anything. I really tried to push for contrast with the beard and robe - tell me what you think!

DSC02783.JPG DSC02784.JPG

A wizard - I used him as a revenant named Braugh, a dragonslayer killed by his prey and raised by the God of Death to assassinate the mayor of the city my players were in (who is secretly-not-secretly a gold dragon). He totally did, too. What a bumhole.

DSC02771.JPG DSC02773.JPG

And the God of Death (and Time!) himself - Gir. Well, Gir'agua'ga'agatha, technically, but that's a bit long and no one except me can pronounce it reliably... My players hate him. He follows them around, and has the ability to be selectively invisible to anyone who doesn't know who he is, and, if they point him out to anyone who can see him, to wipe that person's memory of him having been pointed out. And, when they finally found someone (the uncle of the above gold dragon) whose memory he didn't or couldn't wipe (they're not sure - at the moment, they're still assuming it's a high powered contingency) he wiped there memories instead (which involved me having the dragon say to them "Don't you remember when I told you who and what he was? No? See what I mean?" which pissed them off a ton - They were like "you never told us that!" and I was like "yeah.") I went for gold, red, blue and silver with him, since he's the child of the Phoenix & Kirin - and black and yellow, since those are his personal colors.

MamaGeek WIP: Autumn Ranger

$

This is Bones version of Nienna, Elf Ranger.  Most ranger figures I've seen are painted green or brown, but I thought I'd go for an autumn theme and paint her in red/orange/yellow/brown.  I started by painting the cloak a rusty burghundy, including all the highlights and shadows as if that was the final paint job.  Then I started painting a freehand patchwork leaf pattern.  Each leaf is painted individually, which takes a devilishly long time, I've come to discover.  This is going to take a long time to finish.

And right now she's at one of the those early stages when I can't stand what I'm working on and think it looks terrible.  I've been there so many times before, though, that I will push myself to just keep going, in the hopes it will all turn out right in the end.

Here she is so far:

Baugi's Basing Basics for Beginners

So here's the deal. I like creative, thematic bases. I think they add a lot to a mini, and I'd like to see more folks get more involved in this part of he hobby. That said, I know it can be super intimidating. There are so many flocks, ballasts, tools, and just generally so much STUFF, that it can be overwhelming. My goal here is to make some simple bases, show the materials and the process, and hopefully inspire some folks to do the same.

Hi. I'm Baugi. I like making bases, so I'm going to make some, AND YOU'RE GONNA WATCH! ... if you like.

First up, because I happen to need one, is a:

Carved Flagstone Base

Materials:
Square lipped base (Warlord style)
Elmer's Wood Filler
Fine grit sandpaper
Dental pick
Acrylic Gesso
Paints and such

Base-filler-flagstone1.jpg
Here, I've simply filled the base with the wood filler, and levelled it off. It's certainly not perfect, but generally, neither would a medieval flagstone floor be, so that's fine.

Base-filler-flagstone2.jpg
Here, I've sanded the rougher texture off the top, and begun to carve out the flagstones with the pictured dental pick. No, that isn't blood on the mat. I believe it's P3 Sanguine Base from an earlier mini.

Base-filler-flagstone3.jpg
Here is the base with the flagstones carved out, including some cracks and small pockmarks, for character.

To be continued!

Also, please only create a single index post for your links. This means to modify your existing post when you get a new figure finished instead of posting a new one.

This month's challenge is: 5.

Yes I'm aware with reapercon there's less time to paint, but that's part of the challenge! Spring-like is encouraged but by no means part of the challenge.  On a side note, if you decide to paint up the TMNT and April, that would be epic, but I'm not sure there's ninja turtles minis out there...
We have 1 bonus challenge for this month.

[MOD]Please use the full SKU and name of Reaper minis in the titles of your Show Off threads, per forum guidelines. You can find this information on the blister card or in the online store. I also like to give credit to the sculptor in a tag, so people can find their favorites.

Posting Non-Reaper Figures
When you post in Show off, please use the topic title line for the name of your creation, and use the tags for the manufacturer. That way, you're descriptive and search-friendly at the same time while giving credit where it's due. Use Tags liberally, for manufacturer, name, part number, modifications done, etc. These help our members find your model!

Blah blah blah, prior info, blah blah blah

Spoiler

A couple questions were already raised:
Reaper only? - No.
If going on vacation, can I paint a mini(s) ahead to cover that time frame? - Yes.
Are speed paints acceptable - Yes.
Can it be a mini started previously? - Yes.
If I paint two minis can one be used to cover a previous week? - Not entirely sure on this one. Given the criteria of "2 consecutive weeks with no painted mini" seems unneccesary.
Based or unbased? - Yes.
Do minis for exchanges count? - Yes.

I'm looking to this as a way to increase painted output, especially for people like myself who take far too long to paint something without a hard deadline to prevent procrastination, or have several unfinished projects laying around. By year's end should have 52 (or more) painted minis that you didn't otherwise.  I'm thinking at least a week till "start" simply due to there will likely be questions and guidelines to be pounded out.
Thoughts? Questions?

SO! Here we go...Starting January 8th, we will begin the Resolutionary Painting Challenge!  EDIT: Holy crap 19 participants (from what I gleaned from this thread.) I would like to keep tally here through the contest so..

Participants: If your name is missing, or you believe your count is incorrect, please PM me.

The objective:
To paint 51+  minis throughout the course of the year via monthly quota
(each monthly thread will have the quota listed)

POSSIBLE theme challenge may be made for fun monthly

Reward:
Forum badge/banner type thingy for completing quota every month

If you paint double maybe there'll be an "overachiever" badge or something....lol

Darn near anything!
Reaper/non-reaper!
Any material!
Shelf of shame minis from ages long forgotten!
Exchange minis!
Speed paints!
Armies! (Though I'd encourage perhaps something outside the army as well)
Any Size!
