Frostgrave

Anyone playing this game?  It just came out recently from Osprey, they of the beautifully illustrated guides to historical armies, and is part of a series of new games they are releasing.

Frostgrave is similiar to Mordhiem in that you create a warband, level them up through game play, and the whole game is set in a ruined city -- in this case, a city of permanent winter.  The big difference is that the leader of your warband is always a wizard, and only your wizard gains levels.  They have eight different schools of magic for your wizard, and he begins play with 8 spells, and can have an apprentice who casts the same spells.  The cool thing about the game is that you can use any models with it, and Reaper makes everything you could ever need -- in fact, the official line of Frostgrave minis, from Northstar Figures, is missing a lot of the units, so you'll practically have to turn to Reaper.

This is my warband:

vqxrE2v.jpg

You can have a maximum of 8 soldiers in your warband, plus your wizard and apprentice.  I have six because my wizard and apprentice can cast Animal Companion pre-game, which adds a summoned animal to your warband who takes up a soldier slot.

Movies - Recently Watched or Plan to Watch Soon

The intent of this thread is to state a movie or a few movies you have seen recently or plan to watch soon. Try to include some explanation of why and if you have seen it before.

My intent is to focus on movies already available and not on hype of movies not yet released.

I will start:
Many of the movies I watch are movies I watched as a kid and my wife never saw. Last night we watched Robin Hood: Men in Tights. It was just as funny as I remembered it.

The Fly is on the short list for the wife to see...even though she is reluctant due to being anti-scary movie.

Kingdom Death Druid AKA Eviljames Gencon Piece

My Gen Con entry for this year. Overall I'm very happy with her. It's one of the best faces I've done so far. Had a lot of trouble assembling her though. The spear arm gave me fits as it snapped off several times and afterwards I couldn't seem to get it on straight and without gaps again. eventually I was able to fill it with a tiny amount of green stuff. Also had a little trouble pinning her to the base. You can tell she's not exactly flat on it, she actually floats a tiny bit above it and I just couldn't seem to fix it. Also she's leaning, less now than she was but she's still leaning. I tried to do some OSL with the parts of the spear near her hand but I just couldn't make it look right. So I abandoned that idea for now. Druid IMG_1459.jpg Druid IMG_1461.jpg Druid IMG_1464.jpg Druid IMG_1465.jpg Druid IMG_1467.jpg Druid IMG_1468.jpg Druid IMG_1476.jpg

I finished up this guy today. Even though I'm working on other stuff, I still find time to sneak in some undead every now and then.

Frostgrave Terrain

Lots of things cut out, only a few put together this weekend. I feel like for the amount of time I spend on it, I should have more to show than this... but it definitely exemplifies the whole "Plan, measure, cut" rather than "Idea, cut... crap...." strategy of terrain building.

So far I've got a pair of freestanding stairs. Not sure what they'll be used for right at the moment, but they look pretty good.

And I've cut out the walls for the 6 huts, and textured half of them so far.

15mm Alien Paint n take

This was another mini I did at Odyssey con in April. I don't remember the company any more even though the Paint n take people told me who it was.  He's from Micropanzer Very quick simple tabletop job. He'll fill in for many small multi-armed creatures of weird origins. possibly the most useful paint n take.Alien IMG_1485.jpg Alien IMG_1488.jpg Alien IMG_1491.jpg

What level painter are you? What about me?

$

Tossing this out there, unsure of the appropriate forum board to use.  It's probably unimportant, but I'm wondering how to describe myself as a miniature painter.  I started this hobby one year ago and since then my profile has described me as a painting newbie.  I no longer think of myself as such having painted probably 25-30 figures since then, watched hours of YouTube tutorials, purchased and watched Jen Haley's DVD, posed questions on the forums and had them answered, learned how to prep, prime, base, drybrush, wash, and highlight.  So, what level painter am I?

I thought about graduating to myself from newbie to novice based upon the one year, but rate of painting applies.  The first six months I didn't paint at all, being petrified of making mistakes.  It took me that long to make a few attempts and gradually I got more and more confident.

Should painting level be based on:

Number of years as a miniature painter.

Number of actual miniatures painted.

Mastery of certain painting skills (drybrushing, highlighting, etc).

Sheer awesomeness of finished results

Other?

In AD&D, 1E that I grew up playing, every level had a title.  You graduated from title to title.  Take the thief for example:

Level 1: Rogue

2: Footpad

3: Cutpurse

4: Robber

5: Burglar

6: Filcher

7: Sharper

8: Magsman?  WTH?

9: Thief

10: Master Thief

I wondered if it would be productive to create a universal system here for newcomers to use to describe themselves.

Level 1: Newbie

2: Novice

5: Veteran

6: Advanced

7: Teacher

8: Work for commission

9: Professional

10: Bob Ross

Maybe that's too complex and there should only be five levels rather than ten.  Anyway, I'm graduating myself from newbie to novice, but I no longer feel like a novice.  I'm not sure I've earned the title of veteran, either, so I'm somewhere in between whatever that is.  Thoughts?

Froggy's New 6mm Hoplites

So I decided to try to embark upon a 6mm Ancients/Myth project, cutting all my figures from 3mm black plastic mesh, or "Granny Grating" as it is elsewhere referred to.

Progress so far:

The grating, a few strips of soldiers cut out, and the "Bling On A Roll" stuff I'm using for the shields.

I need to give each one of these guys an overhead thrusting spear.  Any ideas how?  Quick and easy is good, and I don't relish the thought of gluing on 672 individual spears.

Pin Vices, What do YOU use, and what is not to be mentioned?

Hey folks!

I just got in some small drill bits, 61-80, and my pin vice wont hold the smaller ones...

I am wondering what pin vices people use, as I am going to need a new one, I am looking for one with a swivel bottom for easy one handed use.

I recently bought one from "Armory" that I have learned is generically sold by other companies, that is in a word, garbage....

So please chime in with what you like and what you hate!

Thanks!

George

GCB tries foam core joinery

I'm in desperate need of organizing my work area. While cleaning, I found a small stack of foam core sheets. So, I formed a plan to get rid of some foam core sheets, open up some storage, and organize my painting area, all at the same time.

Here's the project, presented wordlessly:

Darn. I've run out of storage space already. I think I'll have to make a second one at least, what with more paint coming in from mail order and Reaper Kickstarters.

Dimensions are 15" wide by 13" deep by 12-1/2" tall with a capacity of 126 bottles.

Total material used for this project: just under 3 standard-sized sheets of foam board.

It would have been 2-1/2 sheets, but on Tuesday the backboard went missing, and I accused the boys of taking it and playing with it and not returning it; on Wednesday I discovered the piece back where it was before after I had cut a replacement, and I accused the boys of returning it secretly to cover their earlier misdemeanor; and on Thursday my wife asked if I had noticed that I had got the foam core piece back, since she had borrowed it as a backdrop for taking eBay sale photos. I formally apologized to the boys for even suspecting them.

Sir Forscale Painting Competition

$

Hey! I've been having a ton of fun using 4 different Sir Forscales, including the one painted by OneBoot.

I'd like to have some more!

So here's the deal:

Paint one or more 77008: Garrick the Bold, in any color scheme or style you choose. You may not add any base other than the base he comes on, although you may add items (skulls, plants, Pokéballs, etc.) to the base. You cannot attach him to anything that would change his height - if you do, he's useless "for scale". You may convert his weapon or do a head-swap, but he must still be recognizable as "Sir Forscale".

Take a great picture. Post it in this thread before . I will pick one or more winners - I might pick 1, 3, 7, or 20. Each winner will then e-mail (NOT PM) me their e-mail address. I will email to each winner a $25 e-gift certificate. Post these pictures BY or ON August 15th - that's 25 days from today.

Oh, and each winner must then ship to Reaper their winning Sir Forscale so that I can use them in photographs. Your e-gc should cover the cost of the initial 77008 and postage. If it does not, I will offer an additional e-gc to cover the difference plus enough to leave you with some sort of reward, upon being shown proof.

Dwarven Archer Paint n take

This guy was done a while ago, but I just never got around to posting him. He was done at Odyssy Con in Madison at their paint n take back in April. Unfortunately I don't know who makes him. The people at the paint n take couldn't remember where he came from but thought he might be Iron Wind. Anyone have any ideas?

I really like how he turned out particularly since I painted him in a little over an hour.Dwarf IMG_1479.jpg Dwarf IMG_1484.jpg Druid IMG_1481.jpg

Edit: Man he was really uncooperative to photograph. I need better lighting and maybe some actual dullcoat.

Weight Loss Support Thread

$

OK, after some searching, the last time we did a weight loss support thread was over five years ago.  It didn't seem to make sense to threadomancy that since it is long out of date.  Anyway, I need to lose weight.  I'm at my highest point since 2000, I'm out of shape, I'm struggling to do some of the things I love like fencing and backpacking, and I am unhappy about it.

My plan for losing weight it to track my calories using the Tap&Track app on my iPod. I also want to increase my aerobic exercise.  Now I know from experience that I do way better at this sort of thing, if I know that other's are holding me accountable, essentially I will disappoint myself but hate disappointing others, which is why I am starting this thread.  My intention will be to post my weekly progress or lack there-of in this post, editing it as I go.  If you wish, I'd like to invite you to start your own tracking post in this topic.  Maybe if we stand together, we can help each other succeed.  If you have no issues with weight, please through your support to those who need it.  I've been yo-yo'ing my whole life and i am sick of it.

My goal is to weigh 225 lb (102 Kg)* by ReaperCon 2015. That gives me 43 weeks to lose 51 pounds, which means I need to do between 1 and 1.5 pounds a week.  I haven't been that low since I was 24 years old.

* This is a weight that my doctor and I decided would be best for me given my barrel chest build.

So here goes:

Start date: June 20 (I already started but am just now having issues keeping it going alone)

Height: 6' 3"

Age: 43

Gender: Male

Goal Weight: 225 lb (102 Kg)

Initial Weight: 276 lb (125 Kg)

Progress:

- 6/30/2014: 274 lb (124.28 Kg) (-2 net lb)

- 7/8/2014: 272.5 lb (123.6 Kg) (-3.5 net lb)

- 7/22/2014: 276 lb (0 net lb)

- 729/2014: 274 lb (-2 net lb)

- 8/5/2014: 270 lb (-6 net lb)
