GW Sisters of Averlorn

So I'm getting ready to do some Sisters of Averlorn from GW, they're also known as the maiden guard. I've got about 20 to do and need to get completed by 25 AUG 16. They're going to go with some other 10 guys I've got done into a multi-base unit for Kings of War. They're supposed to be scouts coming from the forest. I thought since I was in a time crunch, it might be fun to document the process for others if they ever decide to do something like this.

So my first step was to remove all the parts from the sprues and get rid of all the mold lines and burrs.  Each mini consists of Head, Chest, Cloak, Bow, Feet and one accessory - so 120 desprued and cleaned up pieces (about three hours). Since I wasn't putting the models together at this point (easier to paint each piece separately) I needed to find some way to prime them.

My Mother in law likes to send fresh fruit baskets where the fruit is already cut and diced. Each piece is skewered on a plastic kebob (for lack of a better word). So with a small piece of blu-tack, a kebob and some spare pieces of foam I was able to produce this (another hour);

I primed all the pieces and was able to put the base color on 80 pieces (minus heads and accessories). It took about six hours to get that portion done. But here's where the base colors are at;

Hopefully I'll be able to do the base colors on the faces tonight/tomorrow and I'll take some closer shots so the colors are visible. Any comments or questions appreciated.

Dark Alchemy scenario 1 game board WIP

So over in the Frostgrave thread I posted that I would write up a battle report. Well putting together the the terrain pieces I have (not many ), I realized I didn't have enough. So I'm torn between what to build the remaining set up out of. I have several already cast piece of HA blocks of ruined field stone, lots of foam core, modelling clay, and miliput. I have in idea of how I want to set the board up, but need more pieces.

Here is a quick photo of the start. I cut out 2' × 2' piece of foam core for the play area as per the scenario size. Then placed the pieces down. This is where I stand.

It's rough, but I want to get started learning the game. I don't want to use generic stand ins, but I'm OK with it being unpainted since the 3 scenarios are solo runs.

Behold! This is the Bones version of the Eye Beast, primed with Vallejo acrylic grey, then painted with (mostly) Humbrol enamels. Good practice for painting eyes

Today I began a new project I agreed to, so I thought I would start a WIP for it.  It is reaper's Phoenix and I plan to try my hand at painting fire and wings.

Well here it is primed:

Figured I'd go ahead and get started on this for my own and work on him this week while I get ready to do a Commission piece next week.

This is the recent Barbarian Bust that I received from Fantastic Miniatures yesterday. I couldn't wait to get started and he's been a lot of fun thus far!

New England Paint Day

Well the New Year gets me thinking of years past and things to do in the coming year.  So I think it is high time that we resurrect the New England Paint Day.

For those of you unfamiliar with the New England Paint Day, it is a get together of like minded individuals; to paint, share techniques and to just have a plain old good time.

On to the debate.  As this is a New England Paint Day, we have to figure out the location.  In the past, they have been hosted by individual painters and at game stores.  I can set up a time with Pat at my FLGS (Citadel Games Cellar in Groton CT) or I can host at my house depending on the number of people.  For those who were at the last CT paint day, the Citadel has moved down the street to a new location and has much better lighting this time around.

I am open to other locations if it is more convenient for the majority; someone else would just have to step up and procure a location.  Right now I should be good for most weekends up until April.

So, who's interested?

Avukavali snake demon 77393 PG-13 version

ok I am going to try this with out raising too many alarms, I recently modified one of the snake demons 77393 I wanted to show her off on the forum with out posting it somewhere else, so I modified it a little more and made it PG-13. I decided it had too many arms so 4 0f the 6 were not used. the remaining arms hands looked awful so I chopped them off and glued some GW dark elf arm holding a sword. the other was replaced with a gene stealer arm (I think) holding a sort of fang weapon (I found it in the infamous bits box) I filled in the holes where the other arms used to be smoothed it down a bit. I then added some filler between the cleavage and there you have it. snake demon PG-13 version. this is my most heavily modified mini to date. enjoy, critique welcomed. still working the base.

Justin Forscale the Green, I wanted his armor to look like it had been through a lot and not maintained very well.

Not as good as many of the ones I have seen on this forum, but it is good job for my skill level.

Just curious as I'm gathering up materials for a custom figure but if one already done up it'd save me some time.

Chris's Frostgrave Terrain Efforts

I thought I would start my own Frostgrave terrain thread, since I started on my second ruin this week, and don't see my self stopping anytime soon. ::P: And, I didn't want to keep posting links in David's excellent Frostgrave terrain thread found here,
http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/65272-frostgrave-terrain/ , and detract from his efforts.

For those that missed it, I already posted my first ruin here in the Frostgrave thread in the Fantasy sub-forum:
http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/63635-frostgrave/?p=1252554

This week, I thought I'd take things to another level  and try my hand at a two-story ruin...
Two improvements I wanted to try this week were to add more debris on to the base; and to mount the building on a squared base to help it feel more like an urban building.

The main structure is made from cork tiles, and the extra details are made with balsa and bass wood.

I am now so happy that I have spare bones lizardmen, to use for gorns.

77149: Damien, Hellborn Wizard

A double act! These were done for a D&D Adventurers' League game at UK Games Expo - Korozîl the trickster cleric (left), and Aazîl the swashbuckler (right) - twin tiefling brothers.

IMG_9505.jpg

For Korozîl, I chopped off the wizard staff and drilled out the left hand. The crossbow was a Mirliton spare, with the bulky string replaced with some guitar string.

For Aazîl, I chopped both hands off(!) and replaced them with the hands from a 77022 Michelle. I also chopped the curved blades off those swords and replaced them with cut down metal blades from Mirliton. The scabbards (also Mirliton) had to be filed a bit to get them to fit together crossed over; their straps are narrow masking tape.

Paints were enamels over Vallejo acrylic primer. This was my first proper attempt at NMM on the swords, and I'm reasonably pleased with how they turned out. The skintones were interesting - I'm not sure how long it took to get the chests right! I wanted to do something more with the bases but ran out of time before the Games Expo, so just gave them some paint and static grass.

All in all, I'm very proud of these two!

And the D&D game was great (Korozîl died horribly and ended up slightly undead)!

Chaos Wolf is also slightly crazy---goblin conversion challenge

$

Yes, the challenge insanity has gotten me, too. Just not quite as bad....I think. It's also a slightly different variety.

I have 50 of these guys:

IMG_0901.JPG

Don't ask me why, I have no idea; I think they've been multiplying in the dark foot locker they were stored in.

Anyway, the challenge I have set for myself is this:

I will convert 49 of them so that no two are the same.

That's right, I'm going to (hopefully) create a small horde of individualized mono-pose plastic goblins. I am going to leave 1 unconverted, for two reasons:

1) I will have an original figure to compare my conversions against.

2) Once the whole group is done I can hide him in there someplace and see if anyone can find him. :upside:

I suppose you're all gonna want me to paint 'em too, aren't you? Fine, I'll do that, too. The main point of this exercise is the conversion, though; once that's done painting may take a little (lot) longer.

What's the time frame, you ask? There isn't one, but it's not going to be years long or anything, either. In fact, I've already started; see below. Let's call it the last day of September for converting and painting to be done.

Also, just for kicks, I'm gonna give you all some power over me (just a little, don't get any crazy ideas).

You all collectively have 2 vetoes that you may use if you think I'm slacking off and one goblin looks a little too much like another.

Some rules about that:

1) The basic pose will be staying (mostly) the same for all of them, so that doesn't count

2) At least 4 people need to agree that a certain gobbo doesn't cut it; I don't want 22 different people all vetoing a different figure.

3) Vetoes only apply to conversions; the paint jobs will be fairly similar in order to help me get through them.

So, the first 6 are done:

IMG_0902.JPG

Fur trimmed Hun style helmet, looted human helmet, this was supposed to be a fur cap, but it just looks like hair, so we'll call it hair.

IMG_0903.JPG

Eye patch, mohawk, pirate style do-rag.

They all have different shields as well.

Good questions might even earn your House points (remember the houses? That's totally a thing we made up).

Bear in mind I generally dislike "Favorite X" type of questions, but would be ok with "Top 3" style questions, and in fact, will regard any question asking me my favorite X to be that you really meant my Top 3.

There was a thread about this previously, and it was a ton of fun, so ask away!

Rosemary & Co Brushes Questions

Hey folks!

Was Just looking at the Rosemary & Co site for brushes, and there is a super abundance of stuff listed there!

Now it is not going to all be worth using in our hobby, so I am wondering what specific lines and brushes people use from this company.

Thanks!

Shaky hands?

$

Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone else struggles with this. I'm on a medication that affects my motor skills - not enough to trouble me except for the darn shaky hands!

I've learned to compensate, mostly by leaning my hands on the table. But it makes it difficult to paint faces and small details. And I used to be so good at them. :(

My doctor and I agree that I need to come off that particular med, but it's a slow process. We've cut down from 20mg to 10, but I still get pretty shaky.

Does anyone else have shaky hands, medication-related or otherwise? What has helped you?
