So What Have you Read Lately? And other favorite books!

So,

I got quite a few responses when I asked about what people listen to, now I want to know what you READ!

I mean we can't always be painting minis, otherwise no one would be filling up the forums with questions and pictures....ETC

I am assuming that most folks have read Tolkien, I mean can you be into fantasy minis and games without having read them????

But some others that some people might or might not have read and enjoyed or hated...

Heroes Die, By Mathew Woodring Stover.

I used to work for B&N, and as my staff recommendation I picked this book with the claim "If you don't like this book, I will buy it back from you out of my own pocket!" I sold a lot of books, NEVER bought one back...

The jacket blurb says "Day of the Jackal meats Lord of the Rings!"

Believe it!

Three Hearts and Three Lions, By Poul Anderson

Just finished it for the Nth time, great book

Thieves World, Edited by Robert Aspirin

This is a 12 book shared universe series. Chaosium Games made a multi game supplement based on the first 1 or 2 books.

The cover art of the first books is AWESOME!

The Eternal Champion Cycle, By Michael Moorcock

This includes Erekose, Elric, Corum, Hawkmoon, etc Really something every fantasy buff should read....

MM also writes music with Blue Oyster Cult, and has /had a band called Hawkwind. A very nice British Gentleman!

Name of the Wind, By Patrick Rothfuss

The best new fantasy author to come along in a very long time! Read it, and the sequel, "A Wise Man's Fears"

Jack of Shadows, By Roger Zelazny

Most folks have read about Amber, This book is as good as the original Ambers...

I will add more as I find time...

Gotta paint now!

So I put this guy together today and painted him o.O bit of a quick job for me but he was really fun to paint. Still working on taking better pictures sigh. I was trying to get a good shot of his shirt because I did a little cute thing on it. But his arms kinda cast a shadow on it. Anyway, hopefullly it's still recognizable ^_^

As of this writing, comics legend Stan Lee is alive and well and living in semiretirement in California. He often makes cameos in movies based on Marvel properties.

A hoax is going around that he has done croaked. He denies this. I am inclined to believe him.

My CAV Terrain

Since I now have a large amount of CAV Figures I now need some terrain so that I can play. This thread will be dedicated to making terrain for that purpose. To start, I went out and bought 10 sheets of foam core from the dollar store. So far, I've made 4 sets of what ill become rowhomes a large hirise building and a warehokuse structure. I also found a really good way to make homes out of something we all have laying around (or just threw away).

Pics...

I used hot glue to assemble these foam core buildings. The smaller ones will end up being 2 unit row homes.

0331161917_zpscsmvhbsv.jpg

I'm using cardboard to make my roads. They still need to be painted but you can get the idea. The city I'm planning will be a really tight quarters area. Even the largest of CAV will fit between the buildings.

0331161918_zpskjoh8dum.jpg

The buildings are sturdy enough to hold even the heaviest of metal CAV on their roof. Infantry will be able to fight from the roofs and get better vantage points and setup traps.

0331161918a_zps47nwtau1.jpg

But thats only the beginning. I wanted some buildings that you can fight over the top of that won't block line of sight. Looking around I found a few empty blister pack plastics. I hot glued them down to some cardboard to make them rigid.

0331161904_zps7sjrn4dq.jpg

A spray of rustoleum textured paint to look like concrete and they are starting to look more like a building. Plus, they are the perfect size to represent homes or habitats.

0331161957_zpspl4sclxb.jpg

A little detailing with some rms paints and I have a passable concrete house. Its not super detailed but on the table it will work out.

0331162019_zpsnenydkyw.jpg

0331162019a_zpsewvqnrvk.jpg

I only used 1/2 of a sheet of foam core so far and I still have 9 more sheets to make more. I plan to be able to field a full 4'x8' city. So far. I've spent $20 in materials to make my terrain. I plan to use all of the boxes from Amazon purchases to make my own modular road system. Hopefully this will inspire other CAV players to make their own cheap terrain.

Finished up my Luna Wolf Rhino this morning, several things I wish I'd done better but it's going to have to do for now. Further weathering will be done at the end of my entire army painting so I can try to keep it consistent.

Anyway, C&C is heartily welcome!

Received a series of texts from the friend in Indiana to whom I introduced miniature painting... it seems I'm a much better teacher than I am a painter, because she has clearly surpassed me! Or maybe we should give the credit to Wren and Anne, for writing the Learn to Paint Kits that guided my instruction. (We did the kits together, and I added tips and tricks along the way.)

I present to you, her solo rendition of the Eldritch Demon... note to self, next Christmas I'm sending her the full-size Cthulhu.

Spring Exchange to Fanguard

Below is my spring exchange sent to Fanguard "the god of exchanges" so the pressure was on.  he wanted something,, and I quote

"Maybe something inspired by "Fairy Tail" the anime/manga"

So after doing some research and watching a number of Anime shorts online, I selected one of the main characters to emulate along with  a background character.  Of course I did not choose one of the "good" "guys", instead I went for one of the bad girls!

Using 60129: Chelaxian Infernal Binder as the mini I give you

Minerva Orlando of the Sabertooth guild!

I tried to imitate her power build up magic vortex in her casting hand, which always happens just before she casts a spell.  The colors overall are loosely based on the character including her signature whites scarf.  I , of course, had too add my own signature color (orange) as well.

Then I added the background Palace guard character.  The guards show up in the series in the last episode I watched,,, just cause!

here is 14407: Crusader Templar Ironspine as the guard in his dress palace colors!

I hope you enjoy and all feedback is appreciated!

Gourls Paints: 77102, Ebonwrath

Well, I finally did it. I painted a dragon. I've got T'raukzul and Stormwing both coming from the Kickstarter, and a Deathsleet and a Blightfang here still waiting for me to be brave enough to apply paint to them. I feel more confident about that now that I've done Ebonwrath. It's a pretty traditional color scheme, I know. I don't have a light box or anything fancy. Just my phone. Hence the crappy photos. I'd like to base him sometime. I'm thinking the wetlands from Secret Weapon. Put him in a swamp. I need more resources though. And I'd need to practice on something smaller to make sure I don't muck it up.

Anyway, c&c welcome!

This is the last of my painted figures from recent weeks.  I wanted to do him up in dark colors, without using a lot of black.  I don't have a specific character in mind, and this way he can fit a variety of roles if he ever sees use on a game table.

Now to rest up and clean the table for the big weekend!

Masking for bases

A few times I've made bases, painted them, pinned minis to them and then painted the minis. Whenever I do this I invariably mess up the base while painting the mini. Is there something to mask the base with after I've pinned the mini on that I can peel off after I'm done that won't destroy the base painting and features (like rock and sand?)

FTG12 - Goblin Children, Citadel miniatures

Here's some more of my old Citadel pre-slotta goblins which I have been painting this week.

These are some goblin children (FTG12). Ahhhhh, aren't they cute, although the boy does look a little grumpy! The girl is carrying a little rag doll which I painted up to match her - kind of like a "(goblin) mini me".

I've kept the bases as they are for the "old school" look on my display shelf.

I've been painting up a few of my old Citadel pre-slotta goblins this week.

First up is this female goblin (FTG11) who looks pretty scary, I'd imagine her goblin husband keeps a very low profile! I think there were various different weapon versions of this mini.

I've kept the base as it is for an "old school" look on my display shelf.

Printable Scenery: Winterdale 2 Tavern WIP

$

Hello! This is my first post, and I am a complete noob at painting and miniatures. My friends have finally got me started on Pathfinder after trying for awhile, and I decided I needed to paint my own figure. It's kind of snowballing and I'm getting into other stuff.

Anyway, I wanted to try painting a building, and I love new technology. So I decided to try a 3D printed building to help bring more flavor to the game. I started with a test build from the company Via Ludibunda, and wasn't impressed with the scale or the paintability from the hub I chose.

I now have the Winterdale 2 Tavern from printablescenery.com. Their photo they use to sell it is thus:

inn.JPG

It looks nice. But obviously it was done with a more realistic bent to work with WWII wargaming. I tend to focus more on the fantasy aspect, and have decided to go in the style of Final Fantasy IX buildings. Like this:

IMG_0806.PNG

I got the model yesterday from Emeraldcitymaker.com(An on demand 3D printing company), and it turns out I'm missing a piece. The straw roof over the stable wasn't included with the packet I bought from printablescenery and am waiting for them to send it. In the meantime, I started with planning out the inside.

IMG_0803.JPG

This is the model put together with my Anirion figure. The yellow building on the right is the demo building I printed and painted from Via Ludibunda. I learned a lot doing it. PLA plastic soaks up paint like nobodys business. I had to do almost 5 coats of yellow to make the yellow stick. You absolutely do not want to put a light coating over a dark one, or you'll be painting for DAYS. Also, the size of the model is probably 25mm instead of 28mm, which means the figures look too large in it.

IMG_0804.JPG

IMG_0805.JPG

The inside of the Tavern is the right size for the accessories I bought. So I figured I could go ahead and paint it and bring it to one of my friends' pathfinder nights later in the next couple weeks.

IMG_0808.JPG

...Which brings us to the current state. I love the red shingles, but I'm afraid to add a wash now because I don't want to darken the bright red color. I dislike the work I did on the flagstone bottom. I followed that excellent flagstone styrofoam guide on this site, but the principals of PLA 3D print worked against me.

Because a 3D printed object is done in layers, those layers are present on the model. Whenever you do a wash, the wash goes inbetween the layers and sticks out. This model is printed in such a way to minimize the effect, but when I tried to wash the stones they just soaked it up and made the ridges more visible.

Hints and tricks are greatly appreciated. I was hoping someone could help me "fix" the stones to make them a little less "standoutish." I was thinking of just doing a black wash with MSP black to tone down the brighter colors a bit, but am worried about the ridges showing up again. I have been kind of hurrying with it too because I wanted to get it game ready in case they decided to do game night soon.

Any other general tips would be appreciated too.

Memorial Day Paint Binge Challenge 2016

$
0
0

It's that time of year again.  Those of us in the US have a 3 day holiday weekend coming up (May 28-30) and I am challenging you all to join me in a massively multiplayer paint binge!   Everyone is welcome to join, even if you can only paint for one day.

The object is to finish as many figures as possible. Quantity counts over quality. All manufacturers are fair game, posting of WIPs and finished pieces is strongly encouraged. You may prep and prime figures before hand, in fact I recommend it. Get out all those Bones,  primed or half painted figures and get ready to finish them before Bones 3 ships!

Got an army to finish, need to move some half painted terrain off your desk, want to tackle that dragon for the big figure contest? This is the time.  All manufacturers are fair game.

Prep and prime your figures now so they are all ready to go Saturday morning (or if you're taking a 4 day weekend, Friday morning). Have your camera ready to share photos.  Photos strongly encouraged!

For this holiday there is a special extra challenge: paint a figure in memory of a lost friend, pet or loved one. Anything goes.

Painting begins at 00:01 May 27 and ends 23:59 May 30.  More or less.

Those of you who video chat are welcome to set up channels.

Just a quick note to Reaper and the Community.

I have been active (mostly) in this community for a couple of years now.  Though I am not nearly as active as some members, I find it refreshing to see new people joining this hobby and community.  Even more refreshing is the welcoming air this community has for new people.  We all have different skill levels, and the kind words, words of encouragement, and even the encouraging critiques of pieces in the show off forums all show the awesomeness of this group of people.  I have learned so much from reading and seeing the different pieces on the forums, and for that I am truly thankful.

To the members of the Reaper staff, I say thank you.  The products I have received are awesome, and the one issue I ever had was dealt with in such a positive and professional manner, that I am at a loss for words.  I work in customer service, and I know that dealing with the public can be difficult a times.  Personally, I have nothing be great experiences with Reaper and the folks I have had occasion to deal with.  Keep up the great work, with all you do.  I'm hopeful to make out to a ReaperCon some day, and maybe get to say thanks in person.

So to all of the Moderators, Members, and staff at Reaper and on the forums I want to say thank you.  Thank you all for making this such a wonderful and inclusive community where we can all learn and share in a hobby.  We are connected through what we love.

Sincerely,
